NAME: Jamison Kingsley - he goes by Dodger.
AGE: 25
CANON: Original character! (Technically from a comic made by me but he has not appeared often enough to be traditionally appable.)
CANON POINT: Before the events of Belonging.
CRAU: N/A
OTHER: Dodger has a universe-specific illness that essentially makes him allergic to time paradoxes - he occasionally has episodes where he might remember something from an alternate timeline/reality version of himself, and will generally get a nosebleed while his brain sorts itself out. If something severe were to happen, such as physically touching a version of himself from another reality, he would have a reaction very similar to the Spiderverse glitches, and could potentially be killed by the pressure. He has special medication to keep it in check, but if we want to wait for him to earn his medication through AC rewards then I can definitely work with that. He is... much more functional with his medication, but not unplayable without it.
SUITABILITY: Dodger is a hyper-sexual, impulsive jackass with an extremely addictive personality, so if anything he would struggle to break away from the game's premise. He has exactly enough experience with reality-shifting to get used being in a game relatively quickly, and after that he'll be very happy to join in on the sex game just to have something to do (and y'know, there's hot people everywhere with incentive to screw him, which is all he needs to not want to go home.) Also, while I don't have any illusions of him being able to genuinely improve as a person, I have played him in several games and can confidently say that he won't create major issues either, since he tends to find close CR and then focus his aggression toward them (with player consent!) So, no mass murders even if he is capable and not morally opposed to it. More than likely he'll find one (1) person to depend on as his moral compass, and improve his behavior at least so that person isn't disappointed in him.
HISTORY:
Dodger’s world is similar to ours, set non-specifically in the future. The main difference is that some people are born with mutant abilities; there is a long history of mutants being regarded as untrustworthy and unpredictable, so those who can’t hide their abilities tend to end up in low-paying or illegal work.
Dodger grew up as an orphan in South Boston. He was taken in by the leader of a biker gang, who gave him his street name and raised him with the intention of Dodger being next in line to run the gang. Dodger chafed against his role heavily, and at age 16 he murdered his adoptive father before going on the run with his girlfriend. For a few years they moved around together, trying to make things work but never quite able to. When he was 20, they split up after a fight where his girlfriend's life was in serious danger.
Dodger ended up moving back to Boston, where he got roped into a cult run by a mutant man who claimed he could warp reality - he was actually just using a mixture of mind control and drugs to control his flock. Dodger was wrapped up in this cult for three years, before finally becoming lucid enough to get out, but he was now heavily dependent on multiple substances.
Around age 24, he was found by an infamous crime boss named Victor Augustine. Between Dodger's reputation for violence and his current addictions, Augustine saw potential in him as a new lap dog. For the last year Dodger has been given food, housing, and support in breaking most of his addictions, and has built up a reputation for his skills with murder, torture and information-gathering. He makes everything his business, and will generally snitch anything he hears to his boss. Which means he has no close friends, but, you know. Fair trade.
ABILITIES:
- Teleportation: He can teleport up to 10 feet in any direction, as long as he has the energy and some room to land. This can be stacked, but he gets easily tired out by teleportation and needs a breather if he goes too far too quickly. He can move through walls during teleportation, and as time effectively slows to a halt for him while teleporting he can place himself with extreme accuracy or move objects in his path. Teleportation causes a loud popping noise, as well as a flash of embers moving vaguely in the direction he went in, so it isn't particularly stealthy.
- Fire: This includes manipulation of his body temperature, fire resistance, lighting his fingertips (or any other body part) on fire, and throwing fireballs roughly the size of a fist. This particular power is controlled heavily by his mood; the angrier he is, the more powerful and less controlled his fire becomes.
- Invisibility: Usually as a fear response, he can turn invisible at will and it takes relatively little energy. However, it doesn't stop him from making noise and all of his other powers draw attention to him while invisible. His clothing turns invisible with him, as does anything he’s holding, but his fire does not.
- Strength: He's strong enough to lift an average-sized car in one hand, and would probably be able to lift a bus with a bit of effort. He has finely tuned control over this to avoid hurting others, or breaking anything he touches.
VICES:
Impulsive - Dodger has always struggled with impulse control, but it's been getting worse over time. He struggles with forming and sticking to long-term plans, and will often act erratically as he chases short-term rewards. He has very little sense of morals and a severely stunted ability to form loyalties, which means that he's prone to back-stabbing his friends in order to get what he wants. It makes him incredibly easy to lead around and manipulate, as little as he'd like to admit it. Dodger will likely eat laced foods, participate in games with clearly posted effects, and make moves on people who could break him in half, just to see what will happen, and consequences rarely stop him from trying again.
Obsessive - While he's rarely capable of being genuinely loyal, and really struggles to socialize normally, he does tend to latch onto specific people and reorganize his life around them. This is frequently done without the other person asking him, or even wanting him, to do so. It also doesn't really stop him from harming them - it's just a fixation, and it often leads to explosive outbursts when he doesn't get what he wants out of it. He also has an extremely addictive personality, largely because he doesn't like being alone with his own thoughts and therefore will reach for literally anything that will keep him distracted. Alcohol, cigarettes and sex are his main traditional vices, but he'll try any new drug at least once, and he'll likely be spending a lot of his time gambling for the dopamine rush.
Aggressive - There is a large part of Dodger that just enjoys violence, as his most consistent and dependable way to interface with the world around him, but he also genuinely struggles to control his own anger. It's fair to say that the rage is always bubbling under the surface, and it takes a shockingly small amount of stress for it to explode out of him. He is, similarly, very sexually aggressive - he's pushy and not opposed to coercing others into sex, and it takes conscious effort for him not to burn his partners because his emotions are tied so strongly to his powers. (note: while he's a character who's predisposed to non-con, I have zero plans to put characters into those situations without player consent.)
VIRTUES:
Observant - Dodger finds people extremely interesting, in general - he likes to keep notes on others, and tends to remember details about them even if they've only met a few times. (He also has a tendency to spy on others for his own curiosity, but like, don't worry about that.) He's very gifted with visual calculus, and has a knack for drawing information out of both speech and environments that other people wouldn't notice. This does not extend to insight - while he is fairly good at picking up on the behavior of other people, he often struggles to understand the intentions underneath, or how his own actions affect them.
Resourceful - Dodger is great at making the most of what he's given - the more grave a situation he's in, the more serious he gets about himself and those he cares about making it out in one piece. This doesn't really extend to money - he's always been financially illiterate and too impulsive to save it - but with things like food, shelter, and first-aid he tends to have a lot of knowledge to fall back on, to keep himself alive. He would do unspeakable crimes to make sure those he cares about have what they need, and he's also likely to ignore his own needs for their sake. If food is limited, he'll eat once everyone else is fed, or not at all.
Determined - Above all else, Dodger refuses to give up. As pessimistic and defeated as he acts, there is a part of him that cannot stop moving, cannot stop fighting, no matter how difficult things get for him. As much as he hates to admit it, and as difficult as it is to express it, he cannot fully shake the hope of one day getting to a good place, building proper connections and becoming someone who he won't hate when he looks in the mirror. He wants to heal, he wants to be cared about by others, and he wants to make the world around him better. It's just... very difficult to slot any of that into his worldview, which is built almost entirely on the idea that he is a worthless, evil creature who can only harm anyone he touches.
SUIT REQUESTS: He fits anywhere... so here's some thoughts on all of the suits. It's worth noting though that he doesn't really need encouragement to engage with the game, so I'm erring on the assumption that Something Happens to prevent him from having sex long enough to feel their effects.
Diamonds - This is his first pick since it ties really nicely into Dodger's impulsivity and chasing of physical sensations. He's already someone who struggles to behave around others, and the Diamond effects would feel like his body forcing him back into his vices even if he somehow stopped feeding them. It would be particularly fun to play with the added aggression / animalistic behavior, since he already has to hold himself back to not hurt others with his mutations. It plays well with his "uncontrollable beast with one person who can calm them down" kinda vibe. (And, if it gets bad enough, being able to be aggressive without his super-strength working would be thrilling in its own right.)
Spades - Of all the suits, this is probably closest to Dodger's default state of being. It's also a state that can lead to very interesting threads - as much as Dodger enjoys domination, he enjoys being dominated just as much, and there's nothing more thrilling than physical fights that devolve into sex. Digging into his more negative traits would not challenge him much, but it would lead to a lot of encounters that he's very comfortable seeking out again. It would also play very well into him dragging other characters down to his level.
Hearts - Opposite reasoning from Spades, this would challenge him in a very interesting way since he tends to hold others at arm's length even if he's actively sleeping with them. Historically he is a very jealous, possessive partner whose life gets consumed by romantic attachments, but it would be fun to force him into impulsive affection and showing a side of himself that he struggles to bare even to those he loves. He will... probably be more embarrassed by that than anything the other suits can do to him.
Clubs - Similar to Spades, Dodger already struggles with a lot of this, but the 'confessing secrets' bit would strongly incentivize him not to let his suit darken too much. He detests giving full answers, and the thought of others knowing the color of his soul makes his skin crawl. As a mun, though, I think it would be very fun to play with forcing him to give information to other characters that he normally wouldn't - and it would likely lead to him paying a lot more attention to them, out of fear that they'll use that information against him.
RANK REQUESTS: This isn't a strong preference but I think it could be fun to start him out as a Jack. I think getting a taste of luxury would go to his head pretty quickly, and make him even less willing to leave than he already would be, but I also want it to be easy and accessible for other characters to downgrade him because he does deserve to be taken down a peg. But any rank works! Either way he'll be strongly incentivized to try and upgrade whenever he can.
SAMPLES:
TDM Toplevel - includes a thread where he has public sex with Esikko after drinking laced sake, a thread where he and Viktor trying to puzzle out the Room of Infinite Doors, and a thread where he and Archduke J engage in knife play / guro on the Ferris Wheel.
The toplevel itself handles Dodger's arrival in GP and his general attitude while getting used to the world. His thread with Esikko involves a glimpse at his reality-shifting illness, as well as the softer sort of smut he's capable of. His thread with Viktor shows off some of his more analytical leanings, as well as the pessimism that tends to dampen his willingness to try things. And his thread with J showcases the sort of depravity he's capable of, with very little encouragement.
(I'm picking Dodger back up after not playing him for three years, so... I have more samples but they are VERY OLD at this point.)
