[General] Dodger's Backstory
Dodger’s world is similar to ours, set nonspecifically in the future. The main difference is that some people are born with mutant abilities; some can be as mundane as being able to shift things a bit to the left without touching them, and others can be as extreme as controlling the minds of others just by speaking. There is a long history of mutants being regarded as untrustworthy and unpredictable, so those who can’t hide their abilities tend to end up in low-paying or illegal work. Mutant hitmen are in especially high demand, as they can perform tasks that might be impossible for a mundane.
Jamison Brett Kingsley was born in South Boston, the product of two runaway teenagers who broke up while his mother was pregnant. He never met his father, although his mother spoke highly of him. He spent most of his childhood starving on the streets, and his mother passed away when he was about eight. Shortly after her death Jamie was taken in by Benny di Lonza, the leader of a local gang called the Sun Riders. Benny raised him alongside his own biological son, Tony, who was two years younger than Jamie.
Jamie and Tony got along well enough at first, but Benny and his girlfriend Yana would constantly pit them against each other. Benny and Yana homeschooled the boys and would hit them for answering questions wrong, or starve one if the other could complete their chores faster. Tony floundered under the pressure from his parents but Jamie excelled; he became cautious and stealthy, and Benny could often encourage him to cheat and lie in order to push punishments onto his brother. By the time Jamie turned 14, Benny and Yana had decided that Jamie was next in line to lead the Sun Riders, and all but forgot that Tony existed.
Around this time, Jamie earned the nickname of Dodger, for his uncanny ability to get himself in and out of trouble. Also around that time, Dodger met his first girlfriend, Janet Smith. They dated for the next two years in secret, as Dodger spun an elaborate web of lies to keep her separate from the rest of his life. This came crashing down when he was 16; Benny confronted him and raked a broken bottle across his face, after which Dodger beat him to death with a table leg, and disappeared.
Dodger took Janet with him, and they moved constantly for 4 years as their relationship slowly deteriorated. Dodger grew up to be just as manipulative and abusive as his adoptive father, and Janet’s patience eventually reached its end. After a physical fight that left Janet significantly worse off than Dodger, he was forced back into homelessness.
Unable to hold a steady job, the then 20-year-old Dodger ended up desperate enough to join an Orphic cult run by a mutant man who could manipulate the minds of those around him. Under the influence of these powers and various narcotics Dodger was enslaved for three years. Most memories of those years are entirely missing, but he remembered enough to know he had been sexually abused on multiple occasions, specifically for the cult leader’s entertainment. At his first opportunity he brutally murdered the cult leader in front of his following, along with anyone else he could get his hands on, before retreating from the world and falling into a slump of suicidal depression.
Dodger was almost 24 when he found the light at the end of the tunnel; it came in the form of Victor Augustine, an infamous crime boss and CEO of the Atlas Corporation. Even in the sorry state he was in, Augustine saw the potential in him. Augustine offered Dodger food, shelter and a job as a lap dog. Dodger took to his new life like a fish to water; in fact, he became so loyal to Augustine that he would purposefully stalk his own coworkers and torture them if they breathed an ill word about the man.
Now 25, Dodger has built a reputation for himself as a merciless killer with extremely flexible morals. He takes pride in his work; killing, torturing, stealing information and manipulating authorities. He makes everything his business, and will generally snitch anything he hears to his boss. Which means he has no close friends, but you know. Fair trade.
